Does the idea of a “career plan” make you cringe?

One of the all-time worst interview questions is “where do you see yourself in 5 years?”

It’s a shortcut question, to sort you into a category: Will this person’s career goals match up with the organization?

But in practice it has the effect of writer’s block. I see the same frozen faces of terror with direct reports, or clients, when we approach the subject of their professional dreams.
